As a toy and game buyer for Live And Learn I review thousands new products every year. Most of what I see is "same old, same old". So, when I came across Munch Math my eyes lit up. I finally found a new and unique game that was not simply a new twist on an old game. Additionally, it had great kid appeal--which is very understandable since it was actually invented by a kid!

Munch Math is an educational board game designed to teach and reinforce math skills in children ages 7 and up. The inventor, 7 year old, Martin Schneider said "...I love math so much, I wanted to make a game that might help other kids have fun with math too." And that is what he did--created a fun, math based, board game.

The basic way to play the game is to select a food item. On your turn you roll two dice, and then you take the resulting two numbers to perform a mathematical operation. The operation you want to choose is one in which the answer will be a number on your board.

For instance, let's say my food item is the chicken leg. My objective is cover all the numbers shown on the chicken leg. On my turn I roll a 3 and a 2, well 3 + 2 = 5, but there is no 5 on the chicken leg, so that is no good. 3 - 2 = 1, and there is a 1 on the chicken leg, so I can cover the 1 with  marker OR since 3 x 2 = 6, I could cover the 6 on the chicken leg. It is my choice.

The winner is the first person to cover all the numbers on their food item.

You can add additional rules such as rolling doubles gives you an extra turns, if younger children play they can roll one die try to match number shown on the die (place markers on all numbers above 6).

The game lends itself  to many variations, which is something we like a lot. It also comes with a nicely made game board with very appealing graphics. The markers are cardboard, but they serve their purpose. And best of all, the game encourages children to think and use their math skills.

Munch Math is a very nice game that gives children a head start on tomorrow!
