Help preschoolers learn their numbers, do simple arithmetic and begin logical reasoning by using, and then expanding on, the following activities.
The activities are designed to give you an idea of the types of number games you can play with the average preschooler (ages 3 1/2 to 5). After playing these games online continue playing the games at home without the help of your computer. For example, play the "cookie game" at the kitchen table using real cookies, apples, etc.
A great way to play the "wrong numbers game" is to play school with your preschooler. Use a chalkboard to write your number sequences and then call your child to the chalkboard to make corrections. And when you play school, sometimes call an imaginary student to the chalkboard. After calling the imaginary student wait a second and say, "Oh, I'm sorry--that was a great try, but it is not right. Does anyone else want to try?" And then call your child to the chalk board.
The most important thing to remember when teaching a preschooler is that they need positive feedback, even when they make a mistake! Positive feedback simply means being excited for the child.
Preschoolers want to please their parents. They are proud when they do something that makes mom and dad excited or happy. So get excited when the child gets a correct answer. And, get excited when they get a wrong answer too! But after getting a wrong answer explain why their answer was incorrect. For instance...
"That was a really great try!" "You were so close!" VISUALLY SHOW THE SOLUTION AS YOU SAY, "But if you had three cookies..." LAY OUT 3 COOKIES "... and I ate one..." PRETEND TO EAT ONE "... you would only have two cookies left." SHOW CHILD THAT TWO COOKIES REMAIN.
We hope these activities give you additional ideas.
