CPSC, Lifetime Products Inc. Announce Recall
of ProCourt Portable Basketball Systems
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Lifetime Products Inc. of Clearfield, Utah, is recalling over 29,800
ProCourt portable basketball systems. The basketball system's base can
develop a leak, allowing the water used to stabilize the system to leak
out. As a result, the basketball system can fall over, presenting a risk
of injury to the consumer.
CPSC, Cosco Announce Recall to Repair Quiet
TimeTM Infant Swings
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Cosco Inc. of Columbus, Ind., is providing a free repair kit for
about 355,500 Quiet TimeTM infant swings. Screws connecting the metal hanger
tubes and the U-shaped seat support can loosen and fall out, causing the
seat support and seat to fall. Infants can be injured from the fall.
CPSC, Etna Products Inc. Announce Recall of
Wooden Toy Cars
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Etna Products Inc. of New York, N.Y., is recalling about 13,200
wooden toy cars. The glue holding the toy together deteriorates causing
the hub caps, headlights, and blocks to separate. Young children could
choke on the headlights and blocks or inhale the hub caps into their lungs,
which could lead to death.
CPSC and Division Sales Inc. Announce Wooden
Toy Truck
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Division Sales Inc. of Itasca, Ill., is recalling about 6,300 wooden
toy trucks. The toy trucks have wooden balls and figures in the cab that
are a small parts choking hazard to young children.
CPSC, Playskool Announce Recall of "Weebles
Tractor" Toys
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Playskool of Pawtucket, R.I., is voluntarily recalling over 116,000
"Weebles Tractor" toys (item number 5242). The red plunger located on top
of the toy can crack and break apart, presenting a potential choking hazard
to young children.
CPSC, Century Announce Recall to Repair TraveLite
SPORT Strollers
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Century Products Co. of Macedonia, Ohio, is voluntarily providing
a free repair kit for about 166,000 Century TraveLite SPORT strollers.
Certain models of these strollers have restraint buckles that could unlatch
and fold locks that could break causing the stroller to fold unexpectedly
if the front wheels of the stroller hit a curb or other stationary object.
If the restraint buckle unlatches or the fold locks fail, a child could
fall out of the stroller and be injured.
CPSC, Catton Brothers Corp. Announce Recall of Disney Babies Romper Sets for Boys and Girls In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC),Catton Brothers Corp. of New York, N.Y., is recalling about 13,200 Disney Babies romper sets for boys and girls. Some of the romper's crotch snaps were improperly attached, exposing a sharp prong. The exposed prong could cause injury to infants.
CPSC, OddzOn Products Inc. Announce Recall
of Children's "Starfish" Swimming Vests: Buckles Can Unlatch
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), OddzOn Products Inc. of Campbell, Calif., is recalling about 5,000
children's swimming vests manufactured in 1996 and sold under the brand
name "Starfish." The vest's buckles can unlatch unexpectedly while in use,
releasing a child into the water. Children could drown if they are released
into the water without the aid of the swimming vest.
CPSC Announces Recall of Wooden and Metal
Bunk Beds
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), five bunk bed manufacturers are recalling approximately 3,100 wooden
and metal bunk beds. The bunk beds have openings on the top bunk that present
a potential entrapment hazard to young children. The spaces can be large
enough for a child's body to pass through, but small enough to entrap a
child's head.

CPSC, Graco Announce Recall to Repair Seat
Rings on Stationary Entertainers
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Graco Children's Products Inc. of Elverson, Pa., is providing a
free replacement seat ring for about 63,000 Graco stationary entertainers
made prior to March 1996. The white plastic seat rings on the stationary
entertainers have sharp edges that can cut or scratch a child's legs during
use.
CPSC, Coaster Company of America Inc. Announce
Recall of Baby Cribs
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Coaster Company of America Inc. of Santa Fe Springs, Calif., is
recalling 1,856 full-size metal baby cribs. There are two models of cribs
being recalled. The cribs pose entrapment or choking hazards to babies
that could lead to serious injury or death.
CPSC, Fisher-Price Announce Recall of Toy
Police Cars
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Fisher-Price Inc. of East Aurora, N.Y., is voluntarily recalling
about 17,000 toy police cars sold since February 1997. The back of some
cars could crack and break apart, presenting a potential choking hazard
to young children.
Following Recent Injury CPSC Reissues Warning:
Lawn Darts Are Banned and Should Be Destroyed
After a recent serious injury caused by a lawn dart, the U.S. Consumer
Product Safety Commission reissued its warning that lawn darts are banned
and should be destroyed. Effective on December 19, 1988, CPSC banned the
sale of all lawn darts in the United States. Pointed lawn darts, intended
for use in an outdoor game, have been responsible for the deaths of three
children. The most recent injury occurred last week in Elkhart, Ind., when
a 7-year-old boy suffered a brain injury after a lawn dart pierced his
skull.
CPSC Announces Recall of Additional Go-Karts
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), six go-kart manufacturers are recalling for repair over 122,000
go-karts with exposed rear axles. Riders can be seriously injured or killed
if their long hair or clothing becomes entangled in the rotating rear axle.
CPSC and The Mazel Co. Announce Teddy Bear
Recall
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), The Mazel Co. of Solon, Ohio, is voluntarily recalling about 835
Teddy Precious Indian girl and boy stuffed bears. The bears' Native American
style clothing has beads on the headband and at the waist or neck. The
beads can detach and young children can choke on the beads or inhale them
into their lungs, which could lead to death.

CPSC, Evenflo Announce Recall of Happy Camper
Portable Play Yards
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Evenflo Company Inc., of Piqua, Ohio, is offering free hinge cover
kits to all 1.2 million owners of its portable play yards sold under the
Happy Camper, Happy Cabana and Kiddie Camper model names. If the hinges
on the product are not fully rotated, the product can collapse, possibly
trapping the child in the "V" formed by the folded top rails. Additionally,
if leaned or sat upon, the rotating plastic hinges in the middle of the
folding top rails can crack or break, presenting a sharp edge or possibly
allowing the child to escape.
CPSC, C & T International Inc. Announce
Recall to Repair Side Rails on Baby Cribs
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), C & T International Inc. of Palisades Park, N.J., is recalling
about 800 full-size wooden baby cribs to repair their side rails. The side
rails can loosen and separate, creating a space greater than 2-3/8 inches
between the slats. Babies could be strangled if their heads become entrapped
between the slats. In addition, babies could be seriously injured if they
fall out of the crib.
CPSC, Klutz Inc. Announce Recall of Chinese
Jump Ropes
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Klutz Inc. of Palo Alto, Calif., is offering to replace the Chinese
jump ropes sold with about 66,000 children's activity books by Anne Akers
Johnson entitled "Chinese Jump Rope," distributed by Klutz. The ends of
the elasticized ropes are joined together by metal crimps that may fail
in use. Children using the ropes or standing nearby can be hit by an end
of the rope as it snaps back.
CPSC, IKEA Announce Recall of Stuffed Animals
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), IKEA of Plymouth Meeting, Pa., is recalling about 8,000 stuffed
animals. The stuffed animals' eyes can become detached, presenting a choking
hazard to young children.
CPSC and Gamo USA Announce Recall of BB Air
Pistols
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Gamo USA of Fort Lauderdale, Fl. is voluntarily recalling about
1,335 Pre-Compressed Air-Pistols, Model AF-10, designed to shoot BBs. The
BB air gun may discharge unexpectedly and could cause serious injury.

CPSC, Shimano Announce Recall of Bicycle Components
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Shimano American Corp. of Irvine, Calif., is voluntarily recalling
more than 1 million cranks installed on bicycles in North America. The
crank is used to connect the pedal to the frame of the bike. If the crank
breaks, the rider's leg can be injured by contact with the broken crank
or the rider can lose control of the bike, fall and be injured.
The cranks have been installed on more than 200 models of bicycles manufactured since 1994 and sold under at least 49 brand names. Most bicycle manufacturers have sold bicycles that are involved in this recall. The cranks also may have been installed as an upgrade as part of the Altus, Acera and Alivio groups of components. The cranks are numbered FC-CT90, FC-M290 and FC-MC12. These numbers are located on the back or inner side of the right crank arm.
Consumers should check their bicycles' crank assemblies. If they are involved in this recall, consumers should stop using their bicycles immediately and call Shimano at 800-353-4719 to arrange for the free replacement and installation of a new crank assembly at a nearby authorized repair shop. Consumers can also arrange for the free replacement with their bicycle dealers.
CPSC, Placo Announce Recall of Star Wonders
Flying Dolls
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Placo Products Company of Commerce, Calif., is recalling about
140,000 Star Wonders dolls. During use, the wings of the flying dolls can
break off, causing serious eye injuries to consumers.
CPSC and Kreiner Imports Announce the Recall
of Kinder Chocolate Eggs Containing Toys
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Kreiner Imports Inc. of Chicago, Ill., is voluntarily recalling
approximately 5,000 Kinder chocolate eggs, which Kreiner imported into
the United States and which contain a surprise toy within a plastic capsule.
Some of the toys have small parts that present a serious choking and aspiration
hazard to children under three years of age.
CPSC, Gymboree Corp. Announce Recall of Children's
Umbrellas
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Gymboree Corp. of Burlingame, Calif., is voluntarily recalling
about 6,500 children's umbrellas that have surface coating decorations
with high levels of lead. This violates the U.S. Consumer Product Safety
Act. In addition, about 700 similarly decorated beach and golf umbrellas
are being recalled. Ingestion of high levels of lead can present a risk
of lead poisoning to young children. Lead poisoning in children is associated
with behavior problems, learning disabilities, hearing problems and growth
retardation.
CPSC, Century Announce Recall to Repair Lil'
Napper Infant Swings
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Century Products Company of Macedonia, Ohio, is voluntarily providing
a free repair kit for about 125,000 Century Lil' Napper infant swings.
These swings have shoulder harness straps that are placed over each shoulder
and buckled between the child's legs. If the straps on these swings loosen
or are unbuckled, a child can become tangled in the straps and strangle.
CPSC, Novi Kids Announce Recall of Halloween
Bounce Balls
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Novi Kids Inc. of San Diego, Calif., is voluntarily recalling about
40,000 packages of Halloween Bounce Balls sold exclusively at Target stores.
The balls present a serious choking hazard to young children, which can
result in death.
CPSC, Nadel & Sons Toy Corp. Announce
Recall of Stuffed Bears
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Nadel & Sons Toy Corp. of New York, N.Y., is voluntarily recalling
about 8,000 stuffed bears. The eyes of the bears can become detached, presenting
a choking hazard to young children.
CPSC, Al-Dan Trading Inc. Announce Recall
of Wooden Vehicle Toys
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Al-Dan Trading Inc. of Miami, Fla. is recalling over 5,800 wooden
vehicle toys. The toys have small parts that could separate and present
a choking hazard to young children.
CPSC, Multiple Firms Announce Recall of Children's
Toy Jewelry
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission(CPSC),
three firms are voluntarily recalling nearly 42,000 sets of children's
toy jewelry. The necklaces and bracelets involved in this recall can break,
releasing small beads that pose a choking and aspiration hazard to children
under three years of age.
CPSC, United Tradeline Announce Recall of
Toy "Hot Pet Car"
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), United Tradeline Inc. of Arcadia, Calif., is recalling about 4,400
battery-operated toy cars. Small pieces could break off the cars, presenting
a serious aspiration hazard to young children.

CPSC, BRIO Announce Recall of Wooden Clown
Toys to Replace Hats
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), BRIO Corp. of Germantown, Wis., a subsidiary of BRIO AB of Sweden,
is voluntarily replacing the hats on about 79,000 wooden clown toys. The
hats present a potential choking hazard to young children.
CPSC, STK International Announce Recall of
Clock Tambourine Toys
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), STK International Inc. of Vernon, Calif., is recalling over 20,400
Clock Tambourine toys. Small pieces could break off the toys, presenting
potential choking and aspiration hazards to young children.
CPSC, Toys "R" Us Announce Recall of Children's
Soap Craft Set
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Toys "R" Us, of Paramus, N.J., is recalling about 4,000 Baskets
of Bubbles children's craft sets because of a potential fire hazard. If
consumers melt pieces of the soap disks that come with the set in a microwave
oven for 10 minutes, as instructed, the soap could ignite in the microwave.
The instructions should have read 10 seconds rather than 10 minutes.
CPSC, Graco Announce Recall to Repair Carriers
and Carrier/Swing Seats
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Graco Children's Products Inc. of Elverson, Pa., is recalling about
564,000 Graco carriers and carrier/swing seats for repair. The handle on
the seats can unlock unexpectedly, causing an infant to fall and be injured.
CPSC, B&B Stores Announce Recall of Mesh-Sided
Cribs
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), B&B Stores (also known as Velasco Alonso Inc.) of Arecibo,
Puerto Rico, is recalling about 400 mesh-sided cribs. The mattress pad
compresses, a gap can occur between the side panels and the bed frame,
and the snaps can separate from the frame, presenting suffocation hazards.
In addition, the side rails can bend, presenting an entrapment hazard.
CPSC, Cosco Announce Recall for In-Home Repair
of VoyagerTM Car Seat/Strollers
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Cosco Inc. of Columbus, Ind., is recalling about 6,000 VoyagerTM
Car Seat/Strollers for in-home repair. The VoyagerTM
Car Seat/Stroller is a combination product with an infant car seat that
snaps into a frame for use as a stroller. When used as the stroller, the
car seat could become dislodged and fall to the ground. Infants could be
injured from the fall.
CPSC, MTS Products Inc. Announce Recall of
Infant Carriers
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), MTS Products Inc. of Santa Clarita, Calif., is recalling over 18,200
J. Mason infant carriers. The carrier's handle can break causing the carrier
to fall. Infants can be injured from the fall.

CPSC, Riteway Products Announce Recall of
Bicycle Trailers
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Riteway Products of Santa Ana, Calif., is recalling about 5,500
Cycle Design Tag-A-Long bicycle trailers to replace their U-Joints and
accompanying hardware. The U-Joint can break causing the trailing rider
to be separated from the towing bicycle, lose control, fall and be injured.
CPSC, Hedstrom Announce Recall of Glide Rides
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Hedstrom Corp. of Bedford, Pa., is recalling about 1.5 million
Glide Rides, sold with backyard gym sets, for in-home repair. The Glide
Ride's "J-bolt" assembly can break, causing children to fall or drop to
the ground and be injured.
CPSC, The First Years Announce Recall to Repair
High Chair Gym Toys
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), The First Years of Avon, Mass., is recalling about 108,000 First
Years High Chair Gym toys for repair. The clacker balls hanging from the
center of the toy present a choking hazard to young children.
CPSC, Rite Aid Corp. Announce Recall of Two
Flying Dolls
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Rite Aid Corp. of Camp Hill, Pa., is recalling about 12,000 Cyber
Fighter and Flying Angel dolls. During use, the wings of these flying dolls
can break off, and possibly cause serious eye injuries to consumers.
CPSC, Baby's Dream Furniture Announce Recall
to Repair Cribs
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Baby's Dream Furniture Inc. of Buena Vista, Ga., is recalling about
13,000 Generation oak cribs for repair. The cribs have a drop gate (a rail
that folds down) on the front of the crib, rather than a rail that slides
up and down. A baby's fingers can be trapped in the folding drop gate and
injured.
CPSC, Gymboree Corp. Announce Recall of Toy
Wooden Trains
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Gymboree Corp. of Burlingame, Calif., is recalling 727 toy wooden
trains. Wooden pieces of the toy can come off during play, exposing young
children to small parts and presenting a choking hazard.

NHTSA, CPSC Announce Recall of Evenflo On
My Way Infant Car Seats/Carriers
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and
the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall
of about 800,000 Evenflo On My Way infant car seats/carriers because of
a defect that can cause serious injuries to children while the seats are
being used as infant carriers.
CPSC, Fisher-Price Announce Recall of Infant
Toys
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Fisher-Price Inc., of East Aurora, N.Y., is voluntarily recalling
about 21,000 cookie-shaped refrigerator magnet toys and 49,000 crib mobiles.
The magnet can come apart and release small plastic pieces, presenting
a choking hazard to young children. Part of the mobile can detach and fall
into the crib, presenting a risk of injury to young children.
CPSC, Warner Bros. Stores Announce Recall
of Tweety Key Rings
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Warner Bros. Stores Inc., of Burbank, Calif., is recalling about
2,500 Tweety Water Timer Game Key Rings. The key rings contain ethylene
glycol, commonly found in antifreeze, that could leak. Ethylene glycol
can poison young children if swallowed.
CPSC, Atico International Announce Recall
of "Eyeball" and Smiley Face Floating Balls
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Atico International USA, Inc., of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., is recalling
about 329,000 Halloween Floating Eyeballs and about 100,000 Smiley Face
Floating Balls. These balls contain kerosene. If the ball cracks or breaks,
kerosene leaking out could poison young children if swallowed. The smaller
of these balls also present a serious choking hazard to young children.
They lack warning labels required for small balls.
CPSC, Gerry Baby Products Announce Recall
to Repair Baby Monitors
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Gerry Baby Products of Denver, Colo., is recalling about 86,000
rechargeable baby monitors sold under the Clear Choice brand name. When
an electrical short occurs, the rechargeable battery can cause the monitor's
"parent" unit to smoke and flame.

CPSC, Performance Inc. Announce Recall of
Campus Bicycle Pedals
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Performance Inc. of Chapel Hill, N.C., is recalling 3,650 pairs
of the Performance Campus bicycle pedals. The axle on some pedals can break,
causing the rider to lose control of the bicycle, fall and be injured.
CPSC, Payless ShoeSource Announce Recall of
Child's Novelty Purses
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Payless ShoeSource Inc. is recalling about 6,000 novelty purses.
The purses contain a petroleum distillate, used as a decorative liquid
in the purse flap, that could be harmful or fatal if ingested.
CPSC, SRAM Corp. Announce Recall of Bicycle
Chains
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), SRAM Corp., of Chicago, Ill., is recalling about 25,000 Sachs bicycle
chains. The chains can break, causing the rider to lose control of the
bicycle, fall and be injured.
CPSC, Arby's Announce Recall of Toy Saxophones

Bouncing Buggy Toys

(CPSC), Safety 1st of Chestnut Hill, Mass., is voluntarily recalling to
replace certain toy components on 106,000 Bouncing Buggies--a plastic car
attached to a rocking base. The cat "Stop" sign and dog "Go" sign toys
attached to the snack tray may be broken-off by a child, creating a sharp
plastic edge.
CPSC, Specialized Bicycle Components Inc.
Announce Recall to Repair Bicycle Chains
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Specialized Bicycle Components Inc., of Morgan Hill, Calif., is
recalling about 2,500 Specialized bicycles to repair their chains. The
chains on these bicycles were produced with a malfunctioning chain assembly
tool. These chains can break during use, which could result in loss of
control, causing the rider to fall and be injured.

Announce Recall of Bubble BeautiesTM Floating
Balls

(CPSC), K·B Toys TM of Columbus,
Ohio, is recalling about 500 Bubble BeautiesTM
floating balls. These floating balls contain a petroleum distillate, similar
to kerosene, that could be harmful or fatal if ingested.
CPSC, Oscar Mayer Announce Recall to Replace
Decals on Pedal Cars Because of Lead Hazard
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Oscar Mayer Foods Corp., of Madison, Wis., is recalling the decals
on about 16,000 Oscar Mayer Wienermobile pedal cars. These decals contain
high levels of lead. High levels of lead presents a poisoning hazard to
young children if ingested.
CPSC, Laiko International Announce Recall
of Knock-A-Block Wooden Toy
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Laiko International Inc., of City of Industry, Calif., is recalling
2,400 Knock-A-Block wooden toys. The balls in this toy are less than 1.75
inches in diameter, which poses a choking hazard to young children.
CPSC, Michael Friedman Corp. Announce Recall
of Rattles

(CPSC), Michael Friedman Corp. of Brooklyn, N.Y. is recalling about 2,000
rattles. Small parts can break off of the rattles, presenting choking and
aspiration hazards to infants.
CPSC, STK International Announce Recall of
Baby Rattles

(CPSC), STK International Inc., of Vernon, Calif., is recalling about 15,800
baby rattles. The handles of these rattles could present a serious choking
hazard to infants and young children. Because of the rattle handles' shape,
they could block a child's airway if inserted in the throat.
CPSC, Payless ShoeSource Announce Recall of
Children's Sneakers
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Payless ShoeSource Inc., Topeka Kan., is recalling about 80,000
children's sneakers sold at its shoe stores. The teddy bear or heart metal
clasps on the zippers of these shoes can come off, posing a choking hazard
to young children.
CPSC Urges Search for Previously Recalled Portable Cribs and Play Yards The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is urging consumers to search for and stop using previously recalled child products, in particular the Playskool Travel-Lite portable crib, which was manufactured by Kolcraft from 1990 through 1992 and recalled in 1993. In May of 1998, a Chicago toddler died after a Playskool Travel-Lite portable crib collapsed.
CPSC, GapKids Announce Voluntary Recall of
Kids' Anoraks

(CPSC), Gap Kids of San Francisco, Calif., is voluntarily recalling about
127,800 GapKids spring/summer anoraks, a pull-over hooded nylon windbreaker.
The anoraks have paint on the zipper pull that contains an unacceptable
level of lead. While exposure to the defective zippers presents no immediate
health danger, exposure to high levels of lead over an extended period
of time presents a potential poisoning hazard to young children if ingested.

in this recall can break, releasing small plastic beads that pose potential

Repair Toy Chests

(CPSC), Crate & Barrel of Northbrook, Ill., is recalling about 7,000
toy chests for in-home repair of their lids. The toy chest's lid support
can fail, allowing the lid to fall onto a child's head or neck. A child
could become entrapped at the neck and strangle.
CPSC, T.S. Toys Announce Recall of Activity
Block Sets
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), T.S. Toys of Hong Kong is recalling about 4,000 Activity Block
Sets. Rods on one of the blocks could break, releasing small hollow cylinders.
Young children could choke on these cylinders.
CPSC Gets New, Safer Baby Walkers on the Market
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is informing
consumers of the availability of a new generation of safer baby walkers.
These new walkers have features that will reduce the stair-fall injuries
associated with traditional baby walkers.
After Deaths in Maryland, CPSC Issues Warning
About Infant Deaths
After the deaths of two infants in Maryland from suffocation, the
U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is reissuing its warning
about the suffocation risk of putting infants to sleep in adult beds or
on top of soft bedding. Press reports indicate that on May 13, 1998, two
5-month old boys apparently suffocated on an adult bed with soft bedding
while at a Stevensville, Md., home daycare center.
CPSC, In-Mar Trading Inc. Announce Recall
of Jet Fighter Toy and Various Squeak Toys
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), In-Mar Trading Inc., of Dorado, Puerto Rico, is recalling more
than 10,000 various plastic toys. The squeeze toys that are part of this
recall each contain a squeaker, and the jet fighter toy contains small
parts, all of which can become separated from the toy. These small parts
present a choking hazard to young children, and in some cases, an aspiration
hazard which could result in death.
Safety 1st to Pay $175,000 Civil Penalty for
Delay in Reporting Defect With Toddler Bed Rails
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)announced today
that Safety 1st of Chestnut Hill, Mass., has agreed to pay a civil penalty
of $175,000 to settle allegations that it violated the Consumer Product
Safety Act by failing to report in a timely manner a defect with the Safekeeper
toddler bed rails, sold with detachable flash lights.

In Wake of Another Death, CPSC Again Urges
Search for Previously Recalled Portable Cribs and Play Yards
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) again is urging
consumers to immediately search for and stop using previously recalled
child products, in particular the "Playskool Travel-Lite" portable crib,
which was manufactured by Kolcraft from 1990 through 1992 and recalled
in 1993. According to the Asbury Park Press newspaper, a 10-month-old New
Jersey infant died on Wednesday after becoming trapped in a collapsed Playskool
Travel-Lite portable crib. CPSC issued this same warning in June, following
the death of a 17-month-old Chicago toddler in the Playskool Travel-Lite
portable crib. A $60 bounty is being offered for the return of each Travel-Lite
crib.
CPSC, Lexington Furniture Announce Recall
of Wooden Bunk Beds
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Lexington Furniture Industries of Lexington, N.C., is recalling
about 58,000 wooden bunk beds. If the top bunk bed is mis-assembled, there
could be a space between the end of the mattress and the end of the bed
on the top bunk. This space could be large enough for a child's body to
fall through, but small enough to entrap a child's head.
CPSC, Brass Eagle Inc. Announce Recall of
Paintball Masks
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Brass Eagle Inc. of Rogers, Ark., is voluntarily recalling about
42,300 paintball masks to replace their lenses. The lens can crack when
struck by a paintball, presenting a potential eye injury hazard to the
paintball player.

Kiddie Boats

Children's Satin Sleepwear

390,000 children's satin pajama sets. The pajamas fail to meet federal
flammability standards for children's sleepwear. The standards require
sleepwear to be flame resistant, and if the fabric ignites, the flame must
self-extinguish. Failure to meet the flammability standards presents a
risk of serious burn injuries to children.
CPSC, Evenflo Co. Inc. Announce Recall to
Repair Child Carriers

(CPSC), Evenflo Co. Inc., of Piqua, Ohio, is recalling about 22,000 Hike
'N Roll child carriers for repair. Small children can slip sideways into
the leg openings, creating a potential strangulation risk.
CPSC, PJ Toys Announce Recall of Children's
Furniture Sold at Target

(CPSC), PJ Toys, of New York, N.Y., is recalling about 8,300 units of a
variety of children's furniture, sold at Target stores. Some of the paint
on this furniture contains lead, which is toxic if ingested by children.
High levels of lead in paint violate the Consumer Product Safety Act.
CPSC, Century Announce Recall to Repair Fold-N-Go®
Care Centers
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Century Products Co., of Macedonia, Ohio, is voluntarily recalling
about 50,000 Fold 'N Go Care Centers for repair. The care center's bassinet
could have loose fabric, which can create a pocket near the floorboard
in which an infant can become entrapped and suffocate.
CPSC, Tara Toy Corp. Announce Recall of Flying
Dolls

(CPSC), Tara Toy Corp. of Hauppauge, N.Y., is voluntarily recalling about
670,000 Flying Warrior dolls. During use, the wings of these flying dolls
can break off, causing serious injuries to consumers.

CPSC, Fisher-Price Announce Recall to Repair
Power Wheels Ride-On Battery-Powered Vehicles
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Fisher-Price, of East Aurora, N.Y., is conducting a voluntary recall
involving up to 10 million battery-powered Power Wheels ride-on cars and
trucks. The vehicles' electrical components can overheat and cause fires.
Children can suffer injuries from fires and house fires can occur. Additionally,
wiring problems can prevent the vehicles from stopping.
CPSC and Fisher-Price have received approximately 700 reports of electrical components failing and overheating while the cars and trucks were being ridden, charged, parked or stored. About 150 fires have been reported. Nine children suffered minor burns to the hands, legs, or feet; and up to $300,000 in property damage to 22 houses and garages have been reported. There have also been 71 reports of vehicles not stopping. Six children suffered bruises, scratches or bumps when their vehicles hit a car, truck, pole, window or fence.
Power Wheels Service Centers will repair the vehicles. These service centers will install the new parts free of charge and give all recalled vehicles a free safety check-up and tune-up.
The recalled Power Wheels cars and trucks have been sold under nearly 100 model names. The Power Wheels logo and the model name are on each vehicle. All models with two batteries are recalled, and certain models with one battery are recalled. The company will help consumers identify if their model is part of the recall. Power Wheels cars and trucks are intended for children 2 to 7 years old, and the vehicles' speed ranges from 1 to 5 mph, depending on the model.
Toy and mass merchandise stores nationwide sold the cars and trucks since 1984 for about $70 to $300. Consumers should remove the vehicles' batteries right away and not let children use these Power Wheels vehicles until the repair has been made at the service center. To schedule the repair, consumers should call Power Wheels at (800) 977-7800 anytime! Again, the company will help consumers identify if their vehicles are part of the recall.
Power Wheels sold after October 1998 are not involved in this recall.

CPSC, Playwell Toy Announce Recall of Xylophone
Mallets
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Playwell Toy Inc. of Lake Forest, Calif., is recalling the mallets
in approximately 200,000 individually sold xylophones, 150,000 Little OnesTM
Infant three-piece musical gift sets, and 1,800 Little OnesTM Infant five-piece
musical gift sets. The rounded ends of the xylophone mallets are smaller
in diameter than the 1.75-inch standard for small balls. The mallets can
get stuck in the throats of young children, blocking their airways, and
possibly causing death.

of Children's Teva Sandals

children's Teva sandals. The straps attached to the footbed of the sandals
can come apart. This can cause falls.

Two product safety recalls were conducted by firms in cooperation
with the CPSC. W.C. Redmon Co., of Peru, Ind., is recalling about 1,800
"Cuddle Me Close" bedside cradles for repair. The legs on the cradles can
become loose and can separate, causing the cradle to tip. Menard Inc. of
Eau Claire, Wis., is recalling about 8,000 HENRY Gym Sets, model #68. It
includes two swings and a glider. If assembled incorrectly, the glider
support tube on these gym sets could bend or break, causing the riders
to fall or be thrown from the glider.

Replace Toy Basketball Nets

(CPSC), Ohio Art, Little Tikes, Today's Kids and Fisher-Price are announcing
a voluntary recall to replace the nets on 10.1 million toy basketball sets.
Children could strangle on loops or openings in the nets that come unhooked
from the rim, or have knots that slide. If children put their heads into
these openings, the net can get tangled around their necks.
CPSC, L.L. Bean Inc. Announces Recall of Backpack
Child Carriers
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), L.L. Bean Inc., of Freeport, Maine, is recalling about 10,000 backpack
child carriers, model number AC25. Small children can become entangled
in the carrier's harness,which poses a strangulation risk. Also, small
children can work their way out of the harness and fall through a leg opening
or topple out of the top of the carrier, which can cause head and body
injuries.
CPSC, Rubbermaid Inc. Announce Recall of Icy
Rider Toboggan

Carrier

Tandem Strollers

Two WaysTM tandem strollers for in-home
repair. The plastic locks on the folding mechanisms can break during use,
causing the strollers to suddenly collapse. If strollers collapse, babies
can suffer injuries from the fall, including head injuries from hitting
concrete sidewalks. The child's arms, hands or fingers can be cut if they
are on the locking mechanism when the stroller collapses.

installing guardrails on the top bunk. A child could fall or become entrapped
between the wall and the mattress if there are not guardrails on the top
bunk. Other kits had incorrect assembly instructions for the guardrails,
which caused spaces on the top bunk to be larger than 3.5 inches. This
space could be large enough for a child's body to fall through, but small
enough to entrap a child's head and possibly strangle.
CPSC, Safari Ltd. Announce Recall of Toy Puzzles

(CPSC), Safari Ltd., of Miami, Fla., is recalling more than 10,200 toy
puzzles. The puzzle has two shapes that are small parts, presenting a potential
choking hazard to young children.
CPSC, Chariot Victor Publishing Announce Recall of VeggieTales'
Dave and the Giant Pickle Playset
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Chariot Victor Publishing, of Colorado Springs, Colo., is recalling
about 44,000 VeggieTales' Dave and the Giant Pickle playsets. Six of the
character figurines have plastic plugs in their base that can come out,
presenting a small parts choking hazard for young children. The French
Peas figurine also poses a choking hazard because of its size and shape.
CPSC, NIKE Announce Recall of Infant's "Little Air Jordan" Sneakers
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), NIKE USA Inc., of Beaverton, Ore., is voluntarily recalling about
110,000 pairs of infant's shoes sold under the name "Little Air Jordan
XIV." NIKE testing determined the red trim paint on these shoes contain
amounts of lead that exceed Federal standards for children's products.
Prolonged exposure to high levels of lead presents a poisoning hazard to
young children.
CPSC, Disney Announce Recall of Mickey's Waffle Irons
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), The Walt Disney Co., of Burbank, Calif., is voluntarily recalling
more than 1,300 electric waffle irons. The waffle irons are improperly
wired, presenting fire, shock and electrocution hazards to consumers.

(CPSC), Peg Perego USA Inc., of Fort Wayne, Ind., is recalling about 274,000

Sipper Bottles. The bottles' caps can be pulled off, creating a potential
choking hazard.
CPSC, Bell Sports Inc. Announce Recall of Bicycle Helmets
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Bell Sports Inc., of San Jose, Calif., is voluntarily recalling
about 5,800 bicycle helmets used for BMX and downhill mountain biking and
racing. A defect with the helmets' chin strap rivets can result in the
helmet coming off the rider's head in the event of a fall or crash. If
the helmet comes off, serious head injury could result.
CPSC, L.L. Bean Inc. Announce Recall of Second Model of Backpack
Child Carriers
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), L.L. Bean Inc., of Freeport, Maine, is recalling about 13,000 backpack
child carriers, model number W695. Small children can work their way out
of the harness and fall through a leg opening or topple out of the top
of the carrier, which can cause head and body injuries. On December 10,
1998, L.L. Bean recalled another backpack child carrier, model number AC25,
with a similar problem.
CPSC, Firm Announces Recall of Velvet Baby Garments
A product safety recall was conducted by a firm in cooperation
with the CPSC. Spiegel Catalog Inc. is recalling about 4,200 baby garments
made with navy-colored, stretch knit velvet material. The metal snaps can
come off of these baby clothing items, posing a choking hazard to young
children.

cooperation with the CPSC. Tommy Hilfiger U.S.A. Inc. (Tommy Hilfiger),
of New York, N.Y., is recalling about 3,800 infant cardigans. The cardigans'
snaps can detach, presenting a choking hazard to infants.
CPSC, E and I Inc. Announce Recall of Bungee Baby Bouncer
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), E and I Inc., of Bancroft, Idaho, is recalling about 4,000 Bungee
Baby Bouncers. The device allows a baby to bounce while supported in a
harness or "belly band" by an elastic "bungee cord," suspended from a doorway.
Knots tied in the black rope that supports the bouncer can unravel, causing
the baby to fall.
CPSC, Sauder Woodworking Co. Announce Recall of Television Carts
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Sauder Woodworking Co., of Archbold, Ohio, is recalling about 2
million television carts. The carts can tip over and injure children and
adults when the cart and the television fall. Sauder has received 13 reports
of these carts tipping over and the television falling. Two injuries have
been reported. A 3-year-old girl suffered a skull fracture, and an adult
woman suffered a bump to the head and a cut finger.
CPSC, Rawlings Sporting Goods Co. Inc. Announce Recall of Softball
Bats
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Rawlings Sporting Goods Co. Inc., of St. Louis, Mo., is voluntarily
recalling about 45,000 slow-pitch softball bats. The tops of the bats can
shear off during use, posing an injury hazard to batters and bystanders.
CPSC, Firm Announces Recall of Bikes
A product safety recall was conducted by a firm in cooperation
with the CPSC. Dynacraft Industries Inc., of San Rafael, Calif., is recalling
about 500 mountain bikes for repair. The front wheel could fall off while
the bike is being ridden because the quick release mechanism may be difficult
to tighten sufficiently.
CPSC, IKEA Announce Voluntary Recall of Wooden Stacking Ring
Toys to Replace Top Red Ball Pieces
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), IKEA U.S. Inc., of Plymouth Meeting, Pa., is voluntarily replacing
the red ball pieces on top of the wooden stacking rings on about 28,000
stacking ring toys. The red ball that tops this toy poses a choking hazard
to young children.
CPSC, Generation 2 Worldwide Announce Recall to Repair Pisces
Baby Cribs
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Generation 2 Worldwide, of Dothan, Ala., is recalling about 6,600
Next Generation Pisces Cribs. The slats on the headboards and footboards
of these cribs can come loose, creating a large opening between the slats.
CPSC standards limit the space between side rail slats to no more than
2 3/8 inches. Spacing larger than this enables an infant to become entrapped
in the side rails, which can result in serious injury or death.
CPSC, Firm Announces Recall of Wooden Shape Sorter Toys
The following product safety recall was conducted in cooperation
with the CPSC. Zany Brainy Inc., of Wynnewood, Pa., is recalling about
220 Miffy Wooden Shape Sorters. Wooden pegs from the shape sorters can
break off, presenting a small parts choking hazard to children.

618,000 Star Wars Lightsaber toys for repair. The spring in the battery
compartments of these toys can dislodge, causing the batteries to overheat
or rupture. This can cause burns to consumers.
Evenflo Company, Inc. and Hufco-Delaware, Inc. Recall to Replace
Soft Infant Carriers
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Evenflo Company Inc., of Vandalia, Ohio, and Hufco- Delaware Inc.,
of Miamisburg, Ohio, are recalling about 327,000 model 075 and 080 Snugli®
Front & Back PackTM soft infant carriers. Small infants
can shift to one side, slip through the leg openings of these carriers
and fall. Infants under 2 months of age are at greatest risk.
Firms Announce Swimming Pool Dive Stick Recall Because of Impalement
Risk to Children
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and 15 firms
are announcing the recall of more than 19 million dive sticks used in swimming
pools. In shallow water, children can fall or land on a dive stick and
suffer rectal or vaginal impalement. Facial and eye injuries also are possible
when children attempt to retrieve the sticks under water. According to
CPSC Chairman Ann Brown, these dives sticks are dangerous and should not
be used.
Crate & Barrel Announce Recall to Repair Children's Table
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Crate & Barrel, of Northbrook, Ill., is recalling for repair
about 4,300 children's tables. These tables have a 6-inch hole cut in the
center. Children can stick their heads into these holes and become stuck.
Head entrapment can be painful and it can be difficult to free the child.
Restoration Hardware Inc. Announce Recall of Stuffed Sock Monkeys
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Restoration Hardware Inc., of Corte Madera, Calif., is recalling
approximately 12,000 Sock Monkey stuffed animals. Sewing needles or pins
have been found in the stuffing of these monkeys presenting a laceration
hazard.
Firms Announce Recalls of Toys and Lighters
Creative Designs International Ltd., of Feasterville, Pa., is voluntarily
recalling about 7,000 toy Magic Doll Feeding Sets, which contains two bottles.
The nipple on one of the bottles, presents a serious choking hazard to
young children. ZNY Enterprises Inc., of New York, N.Y., is recalling about
10,600 novelty and disposable cigarette lighters. The lighters do not have
child-resistant mechanisms which present fire and burn hazards.
Franco Manufacturing Co. Inc. Recall of Beanbags Sold With BarneyTM
Hopscotch Game Towels

(CPSC), Franco Manufacturing Co. Inc., of Metuchen, N.J., is recalling
beanbags sold with about 4,800 Barney Hopscotch Game Towels. The seams
on these beanbags can separate and allow plastic pellets to be released,
presenting an aspiration hazard to young children.
Recalls of Stairway Gates and Lighters
North States Industries Inc., of Minneapolis, Minn., is recalling
about 3,200 stairway gates. The locking mechanism can release when the
gate is shaken and if placed at the top of the stairs, a child could fall
down the stairs and be injured. C & H Trading, of Metairie, La., is
voluntarily recalling about 40,000 disposable and novelty cigarette lighters.
The lighters do not have any child-resistant mechanisms, as required by
federal law, and young children could ignite the lighters, presenting fire
and burn hazards.

ornamental cherries on these garments pose a choking hazard to young children.
Reebok Recall of Children's Side Zip Sneakers

(CPSC), Reebok International Ltd., of Stoughton, Mass., is recalling about
140,000 children's side zip sneakers. The sneaker's side pocket has a pull
tab on the zipper that can be twisted off, presenting a choking and ingestion
hazard to children.
Cosco Announce Recall of Infant Car Seats/Carriers

(CPSC), and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA),
Cosco Inc. of Columbus, Ind., is announcing the recall of about 670,000
Arriva and Turnabout infant car seats/carriers. When used as an infant
carrier, the handle locks on each side of the seat can unexpectedly release,
causing the seat to flip forward. When this happens, the infant can fall

recalled in 1997 following reports of three deaths and one near strangulation
from entanglement in the swings' shoulder harness straps. CPSC and Century
have since become aware of a fourth death to an 8-month old infant girl
in Texas.

Ball
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC) Burger King Corporation is voluntarily recalling more than 25 million
Pokemon balls included with Burger King kids meals. The balls may pose
a suffocation hazard to children under three years of age. Pokemon balls
are the ball-shaped plastic containers that hold Pokemon toys in Burger
King kids meals. Either half of the Pokemon ball can become stuck on a
child's face, covering the nose and mouth and may cause suffocation of
a child under three years of age.
Magnet Games Recalled by Safari
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Safari Ltd., of Miami, Fla., is recalling about 21,000 magnet games.
Paint on the magnets metal figures contains amounts of lead that exceed
federal standards for children's products. Prolonged exposure to high levels
of lead presents a lead poisoning hazard to young children.
CPSC, Kelty Announce Recall to Repair Backpack Child Carriers
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), Kelty, of Boulder, Colo., is recalling for repair approximately
26,000 Kelty K.I.D.S. backpack child carriers. The seat height adjustment
strap on these carriers can slip out of the buckle. A child can slide downward
in the seat unexpectedly and could fall out of the carrier.
CPSC, NHTSA and Kolcraft Announce Recall of Infant Car Seats/Carriers

Kolcraft Enterprises of Chicago, Ill., is recalling about 754,000 infant
car seat/carriers for repair. When used as an infant carrier, the handle
can unexpectedly move from the intended carrying position, causing the
seat to suddenly rotate. When this happens, the infant can fall to the
ground and suffer serious injuries.
CPSC, Käthe Kruse Doll Co. Announce Recall of "Selecta"
Wooden Toys

(CPSC), Käthe Kruse Doll Co., of Troy, N.Y., is recalling about 2,400
Selecta wooden toys. The balls included with these toys are banned because
they present a serious risk of choking deaths to young children.
CPSC, Gap Inc. Announce Recall of Children's Pajamas
In cooperation with the CPSC, Gap Inc., of San Francisco, Calif.,
is voluntarily recalling about 231,000 children's pajamas sold at Gap and
Old Navy stores. The pajama sets fail to meet federal children's sleepwear
flammability standards. The standards require sleepwear to be flame-resistant,
and if the fabric ignites, the flame must self-extinguish. Failure to meet
the flammability standards presents a risk of serious burns to children.

Mountain Bicycles

Basketball Nets

sets. Children could strangle on loops or openings in nets that come unhooked
from the rim or have knots that slide. If children put their heads into
these openings, the net can get tangled around their necks.
